Wedding, renewal of vows or a handfasting ceremony
A wedding, renewal of vows or a handfasting ceremony is initially about two people wanting to join together as two halves of one union in a ceremony witnessed by family and friends.
The ceremony is the reason for the wedding day and should be personal to those it is about rather than a scripted draft of well known words said by millions of others.
Every ceremony starts with us meeting either in person (within a certain distance) or by video call. From this ceremony requirement questions will be sent for you both to answer where possible and return. From this your unique ceremony will be constructed, created and written. You have full control over what is included within your ceremony including your own choices of music, poems, readings and personalised vows.
Additional elements such as a mead, wine, chocolate or chocolate ceremony, a unity candle ceremony or a wedding ring warming (to name but a few) can also be included. You can also include your children, family, friends or even your dog within your ceremony. They can take part within the elements, read poems, or place handfasting ribbons.

Hold your ceremony anywhere in Whitby
Celebrant led ceremonies give you the ability to hold your ceremony anywhere regardless of if your preferred venue is licenced for weddings or not. Celebrant ceremonies aren’t restricted by certain requirements as marriage ceremonies held in religious places of worship and those held in hotels, licenced venues and register offices are. Celebrant ceremonies can be held completely outdoors if required, at a time and on a date which suits you.
A simple ceremony at the register office is all that is required if you intend to be legally married. This can be arranged by contacting your local register office. Most couples do this wearing casual clothing a few weeks before their celebrant wedding ceremony.
Ceremonies cannot currently take place at Whitby Abbey as English Heritage do not permit ceremonies in this site.
Ceremony information
Unlike legal marriage ceremonies, celebrant ceremonies can be held anywhere. Indoors or outdoors, in a booked venue, on a beach or in a garden (weather permitting) or at desired accommodation. Your chosen venue does not have to be licensed for marriages.
Unlike legal marriage ceremonies there aren’t any restrictions on music, words, poetry or anything said during your ceremony. If you want to include a religious or spiritual reading you can.
Unlike legal marriage ceremonies you are involved in the creation of your ceremony. It is all about you and you choose what is said and who is involved. We work together via a series of online meetings (if distance is an issue) to create a bespoke ceremony.
Unlike legal marriage ceremonies you are not restricted to a certain day or time. If you want an evening ceremony or a Sunday morning ceremony you can. You decide on the day, the time and the venue.
A wedding is a meaningful and celebratory ceremony and if you decide not to become legally married you do not need to do so. It is your choice.
